The Old Church is the mother of Catholic faith in Sikka

The roots of the Church in Flores. The first entry of the Catholic Faith into Maumere' was in 1560. At that time its spread began from Paga and Sikka regions. This mission continued to other areas and eventually most of the Maumere' population became Christian. The first church built in Muamere' was the Church of Saint Ignatius Loyola Sikka. It is over 100 years old and still standing strong.

We as Maumere' people have been taught to be devout Christians since we were born. We still adhere to religious traditions and customs and together these can run in harmony. When there is traditional ceremony we always take time to pray. It is the same when praying in Church we also often add elements of our customs and culture.

The role of Church and religion is very important for our moral values and religious values must be upheld by every community.
