When Flores Trembled on Independence Day: The Red and White, the Wounds, and a Spirit That Refuses to Fall

Celebrating 81 Years of Indonesian Independence amid an earthquake, loss, and the strength of a community that chooses to care for one another.

Flores is one of Indonesia's most remarkable islands. Stretching from west to east across East Nusa Tenggara, it is known not only for its beautiful seas, but also for its mountains, valleys, forests, traditional villages, farmland, and communities that have long lived alongside nature.

Flores lies within the highly active Sunda Banda geological region. Beneath and around this area, complex interactions occur between the Indo-Australia Plate and the Eurasian/Sunda Plate. The tectonic system of the Banda region makes Nusa Tenggara one of the most seismically active parts of Indonesia. The convergence of these plates has produced not only subduction zones, but also back arc thrust systems, including the Flores Back-Arc Thrust.

Flores also has around 11 active volcanoes, including Mount Iya, Inerie, Ebulobo, Kelimutu, Rokatenda, Egon, and others. Inother words words, Flores is not simply as beautiful island. It is part of a living earth system that continues to change.

The Morning of August 15: When the Earth Shook Again

Damage to port facilites, university buildings, and residential homes caused by the magnitude 7.7 earthquake that struck Flores on August 15, 2026

On Saturday, August 15, 2026, at around 5:58 a.m. Central Indonesia Time, a magnitude 7.7 techonic earthquake struck the Flores region. The epicenter was located approximately 30 kilometers northeast of Mbay, Nagekeo Regency, at a depth of about 15 kilometers.

The earthquake was relatively shallow and was associated with activity along the Flores Back-Arc Thrust, a thrust fault system behind the Flores volcanic arc. Its shallow depth meant that strong seismic energy could be felt at the surface, increasing the potential for structural damage.

Indonesia's Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysical Agency (BMKG) recorded the strongest shaking at intensity VII in several areas, including Aesesa in Nagekeo and Riung in Nagada. Strong shaking was also felt across other parts of Flores.

The earthquake also triggered a tsunami early warning. Tsunami wave were measured at approximately 1.61 meters in Reo,  Manggarai, Ende. The tsunami warning was later terminated after sea levels were confirmed to have returned to safe conditions.

But the danger did not completely end with the main earthquake. Numerious aftershocks followed leaving people who had experienced repeated shaking facing fear and uncertainty.

Flores and a Memory That Has Never Truly Disappeared

For generations of Flores residents who remember or have inherited stories from 1992, this earthquake has reopened a deep memory. On December 12, 1992, Flores was struck by a major earthquake of approximately magnitude 7.7 - 7.8, followed by a devasting tsunami. The disaster killed of left at least 2,080 people missing, injured more than 500 people, and left around 90,000 people homeless. More than 30,00 houses were reported destroyed, while damage to buildings was severe in several parts of Flores.

Maumere wa among the areas most heavily affected. Babi Island also experienced a major tragedy. The 1992 and 2026 earthquakes were both related to Flores' tectonic setting, but there was an important difference. The 1992 earthquake occurred at a depth of about 28 kilometers, while the 2026 earthquake occurred at about 1.5 kilometers. This difference in depth helps explain why earthquakes of similar magnitude do not necessaarily produce the same level of damage.

Why Do Earthquakes Occur in Flores?

Earthquakes do not happen without a cause. Earth's surface is made up of tectonic plates that move slowly. Their movement is extremely slow on a human timescale, but over decades, centuries, and thousand of years, stress can accumulate along faults.

Around Flores, the movement and interaction of tectonic plates generate enormous pressure. Some of this deformation is accomplished by fault systems such as the Flores Back-Arc Thrust. When the stress stored along a fault eventually exceeds the strength of the rocks holding it in place, the rocks cn fractures and suddenly move. That is an earthquake.

Therefore, a tectonic earthquake such as the one in Flores is part of a geological process that operates on a timescale far longer than a human lifespan. The more important question, therefore is not "When will the next earthquake happen?" because the exact timing of a major earthquake cannot currently be predicted. The more important question is: "How prepared will we be when the next earthquake occurs?"

When Independence Celebrations Had to Pause

This year, Flores was supposed to  be filled with red and white. Children had prepared for competitions. Schools were preparing for ceremonies. Communities had begun decorating their neighborhoods with flags and banners.

But the earthquake changed everything. In several areas, the series of events commemorating Indonesia's 81st Independence Day were canceled or suspended. The decisions were made out of concern for public safety , humanitarian conditions, and the presence of residents still staying in evacuation shelters.

Perhaps this year there will be no celebration as lively as usual. No long lines of people standing proudly on the field. No competition filled with cheers. No parades filling the streets.

But does that mean Flores is not celebrating independence?

No. It is precisely in this silence that the meaning of independence becomes more visible.

Independence in the Form of Compassion

Community care and emergency response following the earthquake in Flores.

Independence does not always have to be celebrated with stages, competitions, music, or ceremonies. Sometimes independence appears in the form of someone giving food to a neighbor. It appears when residents help put up an emergency tent. It appears when health workers continue working despite damaged facilities. It appears when volunteers travel toward affected areas.

Independence also appears when a family opens its home to someone who has lost theirs, or when a child gives drinking water to another child who needs is more. This is one of the simplest and stronger faces of independence. Because independence is not only about being free from colonial rule. It also means having the ability to stand together when another when another person has fallen.

The State Stands with a Grieving Flores

As of 4:00 p.m. on August 16, 2026, Indonesia's National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) reported 53 deaths and 137 injuries. The victims were spread across Mangarai, East Manggarai, Sikka, West Manggarai, Negekeo, and Ende.

Damage was also widespread. Preliminary data recorded 1,543 heavily damaged houses, 328 moderately damaged houses, and 532 lightly damaged houses. Damage also affected 87  educational facilities, 50 places of worship, and 76 government officies.

A  total of 5,488 people were were staying in centralized evacuation shelters, while another 171 people were displaced independently. These numbers are not merely statistics. Behind every number is a family.

The central government, through BNPB, activated a National Assistance Post in Labuan Bajo and a tactical post in Maumere to accelerate disaster response coordination in Flores BNPB also deployed air and sea resources to reach difficult to access areas.

In the initial phase, the government sent 4,925 food packages: 1,725 packages arrived in Maumere and 3,200 in Labuan Bajo. The assistance is part of a planned distribution of 50,000 food packages for affected communities in East Nusa Tenggara.

Flores Needs Not Only Aid, but Also a Sense of Safety

After an earthquake,  here is another need that cannot always be seen in Statistics: a sense of safety. People who experience a major disaster may become frightened by even small tremors. Children may cry more easily or become afraid to sleep alone. This is especially true for families carrying memories of the 1992 tragedy.

Therefore, Flores recovery cannot be limited to rebuilding houses and roads. Buildings must indeedbe repaired, schools rebuilt, hospitals restored, and communication networks reconnected. But people must also recover. Trauma must be heard. Children need space to understand what happened. Communities need accurate information so that they do not live in fear because of misinformation. And reconstruction must follow the principle of building back safer than before.

The Red and White Still Flies

Earth Quake Photo 4.png

Today, August 17, 2026, some parts of Flores may not be filled with celebration. But perhaps this is precisely the year when the meaning of Independence can be felt most deeply. In one place, someone may be distributing food. Somewhere else, a volunteer may be helping carry an evacuee's belongings. A health worker may be working in an emergency facility. A mother may be comforting her child inside a tent. And among all of this, the Red and White remains. It does not only fly from a flag pole. It lives through human actions of mutual assistance.

Flores has repeatedly shown that the strength of a community is not only visible when people are doing well. Its strength becomes clearest when people manage to stand again after loss. An earthquake can bring down walls, cut roads, stop celebrations and leave an Independence Day field silent. But an earthquake does not have to destroy solidarity.

Conclusion: Celebrating Independence by Caring for One Another

Eighty one years after the Proclamation of Indonesian Independence, Flores commemorates this historic day in a different atmosphere. Not with celebration, but with prayer. Not with parties, but with compassions. Not with cheers, but with hands reaching out to help one another. Perhaps it is circumstances like these that we understand again that independence is not merely a date on a calendar

Independence is the courage to keep living. The courage to rise. The courage to help. The courage to rebuild. And the courage not to treat another person's as someone else's problem. Flores is grieving, but Flores is not alone. From government agencies, health workers, security personnel, volunteers, communities, families, and ordinary citizens, many hands are moving in help. This year, some fields in Flores may be empty on August 17, but the hearts of its people are not empty. There is grief. There is fear. There is the memory of 1992. But there is also hope. And as long as people continue to hold one another's hands and strengthened one another, the spirit of independence has never truly gone out.

Happy 81st Independence Day of the Republic of Indonesia.

Fron Flores, which is grieving, but chooses to keep standing.

Long live the Republic of  Indonesia. Independence is not only about being free, it is also about having the courage to care for one another.
