Silent Portraits of Maumere
Sometimes, the truest form of life reveals itself when no one realizes they are being observed. Around my home in Maumere, I often notice the little things that others might see as ordinary yet to me, each of those moments feels lie a fragment of a story that never stops moving.

Portrait of an Inang selling her vegetables
That morning, an Inangcame carrying vegetables in a plastic basket. In Maumere, we call elderly women Inang, a respectful term for a mother, no matter who she is, even if she's just a humble vegetable seller. From behind, her shoulders appear slightly bent, as if carrying a weariness she never showed. I took her photo quietly from a distance, not wanting her to feel observed. She carefully arranged her vegetables in front of my house while I stood watching in silence. There was a calm patience that could be felt even without seeing her face as though every movement of her hands had long been guided by hard work and sincerity.

Portrait of a little girl cake seller
In the late afternoon, a little child came carrying a tray filled with cakes. She sat shyly in front of my house, waiting patiently while occasionally looking down. Each day the cakes she sold were different, sometimes donuts, fried bananas, rolls, nagasagi, or steamed bread. She didn't speak much, only offered a small smile when I bought her treats. I quietly took her photo without her noticing. Sometimes warm stirred in my chest, a child That young had already learned the meaning of responsibility and hard work in her own way. Behind her salience, I could see a simple kind of courage slowly growing as if she understood that every small step she took mattered deeply for her family at home.

Portrait of a modified car with bright lights
As night approached, the atmoshere in Maumere began to change. From a distance lights of passing vehicles started to glow, reflecting softly on the quiet road. Among them was a brightly modified car shining against the darkness, as if to show that the spirit of this small town never truly fades. I kept that photo, not because of its striking appearance, but because within that light I saw the same thing I had seen before perseverance, spirit, and life that keeps moving just like their Inang and the little child I had photographed earlier.

Portrait of an Inang vegetable seller, a little girl cake seller, and a car gleaming in the night
These three photos are nothing more than silent portraits; the Inang selling vegetables, the little child selling cakes, and the car gleaming under the night lights. Yet behind those who pause for a moment and take a closer look. Maumere may be a small town, yet in every corner, there is a gentle kind of life full of struggle, sincerity, and without pretense. It reminds me that true beauty is not found in what appears striking, but in the honesty that quietly lives among the stillness.
